The Third Sex

In my recent trip to Bangkok, I went to watch Calypso Cabaret in Asia Hotel.

As some of you already know, Calypso Cabaret is a show by transvestites/transgender. (Though there are male performers too.) The most famous transvestites’ shows, as I understand it, can be found in Pattaya. The show I watched wasn’t top class, but I was satisfied with it.

Transvestites are known as kathoey in Thai. But among English-speaking communities, they are called ‘ladyboys’.

Some people ask, “Why are there so many transvestites in Thailand?” Well, I guess there are many such people in other countries too. In fact, I have come across quite a few in Kuala Lumpur. It is just that in the Land of Smile, transvestites are more visible.

The next question is, “Why are they more invisible in Thailand?” I believe this has to do with the fact that majority of Thais are Buddhists. Buddhism, unlike some other religions, does not view transvestites as sinners.

  2. yes i do agree with you that Thai are more open to sexual related issues.. or rather their mindset is that as long as they live their lives the way they want, nobody has the rights to discriminate..

  4. Cool pictures! I've seen quite a few ladyboys in Phuket but I was expecting to. It's cool that Thailand is relaxed about the third sex, although I think it may not be as easy-going as most Westerners think. Problems still exist...

  6. The reason they have so many khatoeys is due to their high tolerance level being Buddhists and not that they are not sinners. The Thais do not encourage them but there is nothing much they can do.

  7. I found that Calypso charged so high fees for the shows. I would say that Simon's Cabaret is Phuket is the best in the world for khatoey shows. The whole theatre is so big and grand outside like a Hollywood red carpet place. Their fees are much cheaper with better props.

  10. We have these shows here in KL too though the props are limited somewhat. I saw a few performances at functions and once at a touristy restaurant. These people are to be respected for their courage to live the life they see fit. Thanks for sharing.

  18. I think one should have the right to live a life they choose. No one has the right to judge another.
