[Part I is here.] Tourists in Chinatown…
Hawker center…
Roasted chestnuts…
Chopsticks…
Stone-carving…
Playing Chinese chess…
How is Singapore’s Chinatown compared to the one in Kuala Lumpur, i.e. Jalan Petaling (茨厂街)? Personally, I find Singapore’s Niucheshui to be more interesting. However, if you want to buy counterfeited goods, Jalan Petaling is the haven.
I noticed that many businesses in Singapore’s Chinatown were run by recent migrants from China rather than local Chinese. Chinese Singaporeans have their own distinctive culture, which is reflected in the Chinatown. It would be a mistake if the government turns it into a Beijing-look-alike.
Hey how much is that set of chopsticks...
ReplyDeleteAre they playing that chess somewhere in the street or??
for me
ReplyDeletesg is a nice place to travel but not for permanent living....
i think petaling street n niucheshui are quite diff, well at least to me it is. i almost nv dare to step into pps. lol.
ReplyDeletePetaling is no more chinatown! It's like a foreign country to me like now. There are just too many stall guarder who are foreigners...

Is Petaling Street so scary?

Singapore's Chinatown has a lot of Chinese Mainlanders, so in a sense it is also in risk of losing its identity.
Hi khengsiong,
ReplyDeleteHey, Chinatown is pretty near my workplace. I pass by after work almost every day after work.
Didn't notice there are alot of Chinese mainlanders there. But the area is infamous for the number of massage parlour with employees from mainland, if you know what I mean. =p
shingo
ReplyDeleteThe stone carver is a Mainlander. I believe the "kungfu teahouse" in part I is also opened by Mainlanders, as the phone number displayed (86...) is a Chinese one.
I like Singapore's Chinatown - maybe because the place cleaner? Petaling Street looks more like an invasion of foreign workers cos more foreigners than chinese people!
ReplyDeletein US, i like to visit Chinatown. i visited Chinatown in each state that i had traveled.
ReplyDeleteThe chopsticks are so nice. Hmm, haven't been to Petaling Street for years!
ReplyDeletefoongpc

ReplyDeleteGo with your friends then no worry :-)
I heard the VCD vendors in Petaling Street are members of gangsters. A friend of my former schoolmate got beaten up in a dark alley when he refused to buy porno from them. These guys use force to sell you smth that you don't want.
ReplyDeletenice, that means that table is actually designed to be there yeah?
ReplyDeleteI know some tables have those checkers design on it...
kyh
ReplyDeleteI can't comment on that... I haven't got such experience.
lisa
Yeah, some with checkers/chess design, some with Chinese chess design...

ReplyDeletea china town flooded with foreign workers ? XD
迷迭香
ReplyDeleteWhat to be done? Evict foreign workers?
It would be a mistake if the government turns it into a Beijing-look-alike.
ReplyDeleteOver here, it is now a Rangoon-lookalike. LOL
