融入社会

马来西亚南洋商报访问了几名从国外归来的华人。他们有些曾在外国工作,有些则是留学生。接受访问时,他们表示不容易融入外国社会,有些人在语言方面有问题,也有的不习惯外国饮食。

我曾经在中国公干几个月,然后又去美国加州当了一年的客工。说也奇怪,我虽然是华人,也懂中文,却总是觉得美国更适合我。基本上,美国给我的最大文化冲击 (culture shock) 是驾车必须靠右行。

首先,语言不是问题。虽然美国有许多人敌视移民,加州的情况还算不错。记得有一回,一名『鬼佬』还向我问路,他大概没有把我当外国人吧。

我的公司像个联合国,同事中有白人、黑人、墨西哥人、萨尔瓦多人、英国人、澳洲人、俄罗斯人、中国人、菲律宾人、越南人、印度人、巴基斯坦人、黎巴嫩人等等。(有些外国人已归化。)美国本土人是否排外我不清楚,但至少他们没表现出来,我的第一位白人朋友非常友善。有一回,男同事邀我去墨西哥Tijuana,其中一人拿出墨西哥美眉的照片炫耀说:『只需五十美元,你就能拥有她。』可惜我的美国签证是 single-entry 的,错失良机了

周末时,我常到佛寺去。其中一个佛寺在Rosemead市,主持是斯里兰卡比丘,其余以白人和缅甸人居多。另有一个『森林寺院』,每逢星期天总是聚集了许多泰国人和寮国人,但它的主持却是曾在泰国出家的洋和尚。

饮食方面,美国有所谓的『美式中餐』,和我们惯常吃的略有不同,但还可以接受。在南加州,日本餐、韩国餐和越南餐都很普及,当然还有我们所熟悉的老麦和家乡鸡。

马来西亚种族关系并不融洽,华人很少交异族朋友。到了国外,把自己困在讲华语的圈子,不能融入当地社会,应该自我检讨。

  1. 加州的情况比较特别,
    而且加州是美国唯一有华语电台和电视频道的州。

    我不喜欢美食中餐,严格说是我不喜欢太中国的食物,因为我比较偏爱马来西亚食物 :p

  2. by the way, i guess "beef & broccoli" is ur favorite dish, cos u had blog abt it last time too :)

    my favorite is "pancake" also my previous host family favorite :D

  3. kikeyBeef and broccoli was not my favorite, but it was most common.

    As for China's food - I find the Eastern China food too oily, and Sichuan food too spicy. But I like dumpling and mantou.

  5. I used to wonder why most Malaysians living abroad love to mix with their own kind... Maybe it's to get some kinda 'home comfort' in foreign lands.

    Goin' abroad but do not try to mix in the society is such a waste... You'll nvr know what kinda treasures you'll discover along the way.

    kyhActually we hardly mix with people of other races in this country, so you can't expect much when we live in other nations.

  8. 迷迭香In the area I stayed, beef and broccoli was most popular. Maybe different elsewhere.
