Japanese firms are famous for their excellent customer service. BBC reported that a rail firm in
Japan has introduced a system to check that its staffs are smiling enough at all times.
Computerized scanners around 15 Tokyo stations will measure the smile curvature to ensure that it is wide enough. Those who fail the measure will be advised to look less serious and more cheerful. (Read the story here.)
I am afraid this kind of monitoring system will create a ‘Big Brother’ atmosphere, whereby the employees feel stressed.
Perhaps a better way to ensure that the staffs smile is to make them happy. How about listening to jokes before attending to customers? Relaxation exercise may help too…

OMG! They have to smile all the time? They have this special scanner? No kidding? My...taht's why Japan is so good. Haha :D
ReplyDeleteI believe Malaysia should have this too.
japan are so canggih that they have this scanner to measure how wide people smile? O.o
ReplyDeletezha dou
It is funny to measure the smile. If one is in no mood to smile but is still required or instructed to smile it is no fun though.
ReplyDeleteA scanner to measure smile curvature? People are humans and not robots. The Japanese are trying to "mechanize" employees?
ReplyDeletetekkaus
ReplyDeleteMalaysians always look grimed? Haha...
annant
Japanese are creative, huh?
Grass
If they are not in good mood, they still will be forced to smile...
Mei Ting
Maybe they should just use smiling robots which/who also bow...
they should smile, but not force to smile until certain curve, ridiculous.. not fair for those who have small mouth. :p
ReplyDeleteno freedom at all, feel poor for them..
no wonder all the services in jp are excellent. msians should really learn from them.
ReplyDeleteKikey
ReplyDeleteI think 'smile curvature' is not affected by the size of mouth.
xin
Yeah, maybe. Malaysians don't smile so much.
for our call centres
ReplyDeletestaff are advised to keep a mirror in front of them, to remind them to smile when they speak!!
it surely sounds different when u smile and speak!! ^_^
Serious? They have scanners like that? Very stressful to have to force to smile all the time! You are right, they should smile from their hearts, not forced to smile.
ReplyDeleteOne word - silly. And some people actually thought it will work? :P
ReplyDeleteOn a more sensible note, I thought you would be interested to come to my blog now and join in the game to win a novel for yourself (or your friend)! 240-pages, BRAND NEW. Spread the word too - the more the merrier, more clues :)
Sounds like a horror story to me!
ReplyDelete迷迭香公司的办法很不错,值得一雪,要对着陌生人微笑不简单,毕竟人有情绪。。
ReplyDelete迷迭香
ReplyDeleteThat's self-monitoring! Sounds like a good idea.
foongpc
It must be very tiring smiling whole day.
JL
Not sure whether it works.
Peter
Horror story!?? That serious?
花木蘭
对,我也认为迷迭香公司的办法不错,不过不是任何地点都能摆放镜子。
This is really something new to me. Measuring the curve of a smile? Haha, those with bigger mouth/lips would have better chances of scoring high! :P
ReplyDeleteWith the Japanese, I think they're definitely serious with this one.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually looking forward to what gadgetry they're going to make.
that would work in Japan, but i think certainly will fail in Malaysia.. hahaha!!
ReplyDeletein my company, every staff of customer service dept got one mirror at their working desk.
ReplyDeleteThey practice smile while talking with customer in phone: )
ya...agreed with 迷迭香。
witch
ReplyDeleteI think smile curvature is not related to the size of the mouth.
Baoru
Maybe the Japanese are too serious?
SK
Oh boy... everyone thinks Malaysians won't make it.
Sinji
Yes, that's certainly a good idea.
要向日本学习
ReplyDelete记得第一日番工教书时,老板娘叫我要多笑,佢惊我吓走晒佢啲学生!哈哈!对人笑,都要睇係乜嘢笑容。
ReplyDeleteA good smile comes from within.
ReplyDeleteFake smiles can be detected, and can be a turnoff.
Smiles should not be made mandatory, but be instead cultivated within the organisation. Having a family-oriented company with simple effective benefits will help.
Smiling is one thing... can they actually help the customers?!:D
