The first three pictures below were shot next to the window of a restaurant. Due to the ample sunlight, I managed to take these pictures without firing the flash:
The next picture was shot away from the window, and flash was fired:
How do I rate my own photos? 5 out of 10. I need to try harder, maybe getting a lens with IS.
All shots were taken at Fun Taipei Café (趣台北)in SS2, Petaling Jaya…
for me, it's good already!
ReplyDeleteI can't help but notice the dumplings in the last picture! Are they good? :P
ReplyDeletenice shot what, and the food looks yummy too~~ :)
ReplyDeletei also like food photography, especially those colorful and nicely presented food is definitely my catch..
ReplyDeletebut i don't have any DSLR or whatever lens, just capture those shot using my normal digital camera..
ReplyDeleteI think your shots here are quite beautiful already. :)
ReplyDeleteI like the last shot. Somehow, close-up shots of food look more engaging. Cookbooks offer good samples.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes.
Sorry cant tell the difference they are all good. The last one with the flash fired seems brighter?

ReplyDeleteThanks.

The dumplings are good - by my standard ;)
SK
Pocket camera with image stabilization may be better for taking food shot.
happysurfer
ReplyDeleteYeah, will read cookbooks also.

Dumplings are white, so they look brighter.
I think all your photos are well taken.
ReplyDeleteIt's not always just about the gear, takes a keen eye to get a great shot.
Come check-out my food blog, your food pix can't be worse than mine lol
Perhaps the bokeh should be stronger when taking food? :) And not necessarily focus on the whole plate/bowl, you can focus nearer - but that you'll need a macro lens. hehe.

ReplyDeleteThanks. Will check out your blog :)
kyh
I don't have macro lens :(
on a side, is fun tai pei good? passed by there so many times yet never tried before
ReplyDeleteYummy dumplings ! :-)
ReplyDeleteDon't be so hard on you...those pictures are OK !
You don't really need a macro for food photography. I shoot food mostly with my 50mm f/1.8 lens. I came across at least two excellent food photography blog where the photographers were using 50mm lens.
ReplyDeleteFood photography has a alot to do with lighting, composition and props.
A good site to study how food photos are taken is Tastespotting. I used to browse through the site often last time and studied how lighting affected the final look of the food photo. I must say natural lighting is still the best.
ReplyDeleteThrough Tastespotting, you can see images that work and those that didn't work. The photos in the site are not all perfect.
ReplyDeleteI am not an expert in photography, so I can't really comment. But is the food nice? : )
ReplyDeletexin, foongpc
ReplyDeleteOK by my standard.

Thanks!

Thanks for your opinion.
I feel that most of your photos are very good and sharp enough. Just need to add some contrasting subjects or colours to add more 'ooomph'...
ReplyDeleteI studied a photography subject in the States but I am hopeless in holding a camera as my job required me to direct professionals to do the shooting for our advertising clients.
ReplyDeleteFor the past over 10 years I have worked with many top and not so top photographers in KL. They amazed me with much tricks to make the subjects interesting such as adding blowing fans, mists, water sprays and an array of funny lightings! I bet all these are not new to you, just my 2 cents.
ReplyDeleteI personally felt that the toughest subjects are the show house's interiors! They need to shift so much till the perfect angle but often without success due to space constraint for the tripods. I still saw some amateur ones who shot directly without shifting an inch which is a No-No...
ReplyDeleteTwilight
ReplyDeleteOh, you do advertising. That must be interesting.
I think food photography takes great light and a lot of prep. Your shots are not professional but are very good nonetheless. Appetizing! I'd have some of these 饺子 :-)
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, my gears aren’t so great for this type of shooting – no macro lens, no image buy vardenafil stabilization (IS). Anyway, having come across so many mouth-watering food photos on the Web, I decided to give it a try
